Brazilian defender Vinicius Rodrigues Borges, commonly known as Breno, has been arrested by German police following a fire at his home in a Munich suburb.

Breno, who joined Bayern Munich from Sao Paulo in 2008, had been briefly hospitalised for smoke inhalation on Tuesday night.

“There is an investigation of serious arson against Mr. Vinicius Rodrigues Borges, because current expert opinion is that the fire was not a random event,” district attorney Thomas Steinkraus-Koch told German newspaper TZ.

The fire caused up to €1.5 million ($2.05 million) worth of damage and the the 21-year old Bayern defender has been arrested to prevent him fleeing or tinkering with evidence.

“We are surprised by the new situation that Breno will now be investigated. As we do not have any further information we cannot make any other comment,” Bayern Munich stated through an official communiqué.

It is also learnt that Breno had consulted a doctor at the Max-Planck Psychiatry Institute at the behest of his club recently. Breno is suffering from chronic knee pain that could threaten his career.

Most Indian football fans will remember the Brazilian from the Oliver Kahn farewell match at Kolkata. Bayern Munich faced Mohun Bagan AC on that day and Breno was sent off after losing his cool. Breno kicked down Bagan’s Branco Cardozo, who commited a foul on the Bayern player. Both players were given the marching order by the referee.
