Barreto bids farewell to Mohun Bagan

Jose Ramirez Barreto

Brazilian star Jose Ramirez Barreto will be bidding his farewell to Mohun Bagan AC, when the green-and-maroon side take on Pune FC in an I-League encounter at the Saltlake Stadium tomorrow. The 35-year-old striker has scored more than 200 goals in 11 years with the Kolkata side.

“It’s time for me to leave the club. You never plan this day but it has to happen some day. It was a real pleasure for me in donning the green and maroon jersey with pride for so many years,” Barreto told at a press conference earlier this week.

Barreto joined Mohun Bagan in 1999 from Brazilian side Grêmio Porto Alegre, before he left the club to play a season each for Penang FA, Malaysia and Mahindra United. He rejoined the Kolkata giants in 2006 for a second spell.

“I am guided by my emotions, maybe some are correct and some are wrong. But that’s the way of life. I have no regrets as I have always given 100 per cent to my favourite team. You cannot correct the mistakes now, it’s past,” said Barreto.

“I am very honoured that Barreto played his first match for the club under me and will also be playing his last match for Bagan under me,” Mohun Bagan’s Technical Director Subrata Bhattacharya told.

“I have told all the players to give their best. A win will be the befitting tribute for him,” Bhattacharya added.

Mohun Bagan are planning to honour the Brazilian star at the sidelines of the I-League match tomorrow. Barreto and his family would be driven around the stadium in an open jeep and felicitated by West Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra.

The Mohun Bagan AC vs Pune FC match is scheduled to kick-off at 15.30 IST and would be telecast live on Ten Action+ and NTB.
