Löw: It can be an initial spark

Germany won their UEFA EURO 2012 opener against Portugal courtesy to a goal by Bayern striker Mario Gomez. Coach Joachim Löw is satisfied to start with a win and he feels that the match could be the needed boost for his to to play a good tournament.

“It can be an initial spark, if you win the first match,” Löw told after the match. “It was clear after the Netherlands v Denmark match that the losing team would have a tough time.”

Talking about the Portugal match, the coach told: “Both teams kept it tight. We were defiant and we had our chances. The goal by Mario was good for the team. We have won the match 1-0 – that’s the most important thing!”

“Mats Hummels had an excellent game. Jerome Boateng played a great game against Ronaldo,” Löw lauded to of his stars.

Looking forward to the next match on Wednesday, the coach added: “The Dutch team is under pressure now. We need to optimise a few things. We need to further improve. The tournament has just started. We need to create more goalscoring opportunities.”

Germany captain Philipp Lahm was relieved after the match. “It is important that we won the match. It was really hard work,” the skipper told.

“I’m happy that the coach had faith in me,” match-winner Mario Gomez commented.
