East Bengal advance to AFC Cup quarterfinals with a 5-1 win

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club have made it to the AFC Cup quarterfinals with an impressive 5-1 win against Myanmar’s Yangon United FC in the pre-quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Penn Ikechukwu Orji opened the score sheet for East Bengal at the Saltlake Stadium just two minutes into the game. Star striker Chidi Edeh doubled the lead in the first half to give the home side a comfortable 2-0 lead at half-time.

Indian interntaional Mehtab Hossain (49th min) extended the lead, while Chidi Edeh scored two more goals to complete his hat trick in the (72nd & 77th min). Yangon’s Brazilian striker Cezar hit a goal back in the 79th minute to hand East Bengal a 5-1 win at the end.

East Bengal is the first Indian team to reach the AFC Cup quarterfinals after Dempo SC advanced to the semifinals in 2008.
