Germany and FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been named the German Footballer of the Year 2014 on Sunday.

Neuer won the prestigious award with 144 votes to his name ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus (135 votes) and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller (105 votes).

“This is a great honour for me. And I’m also surprised. I didn’t expect it, although I know that I performed well,” Neuer told in a first statement to Germany’s kicker magazine. “I’m pleased about this award. We have won the World Cup this year, so this award has a special meaning.”

“This achievement is really precious, if you are named the Footballer of the Year in a year, when you won the Bundesliga title, the cup and especially the World Cup. The World Cup stands for Germany, but the award Footballer of the Year will be mine,” he added.

German national team coach Joachim Löw (248 votes) has won the German Coach of the Year award ahead of Markus Weinzierl (FC Augsburg / 152 votes) and Pep Guardiola (FC Bayern Munich / 89 votes), while Alexandra Popp (VfL Wolfsburg / 97 votes) claimed the Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
