Mumbai City FC humiliate Pune City in ISL's first Maharashtra Derby

Mumbai City FC v FC Pune City

Mumbai City FC v FC Pune City

Mumbai City FC welcomed FC Pune City in town for the first Hero Indian Super League (ISL) home encounter at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Saturday.

Mumbai City FC had lost their first game of the season against Atlético de Kolkata (0-3) and head coach Peter Reid’s team was eager to claim their first points of the campaign against visiting FC Pune City. Pune City had also mixed fortunes in their opening match as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Delhi Dynamos FC.

FC Pune City had an early chance to test Subrata Pal in the Mumbai City FC goal, when Peter Costa caused a foul just outside the box to give away a free kick to the visitors. But David Trezeguet put the free kick off target to the delight of the home fans.

Mumbai City FC opened the score sheet in the 12th minute, when André Francisco Moritz cut inside from the right side and unleashed a curling shot past Pune City goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi.

Trezeguet almost levelled the score line in the 22nd minute, but his terrific attempt from the edge of the six-yard box was denied by the crossbar.

But Mumbai City further increased their lead as Moritz scored his second goal of the match off a corner kick curled in by Lalrindika Ralte. The Brazilian was quick to react and tap in the ball into the back of the net.

Emanuele Belardi denied Mumbai City another goal moments later, when the goalkeeper punched away a powerful shot by Indian international Lalrindika Ralte.

But the hosts kept the pressure high on the Pune City defence and they were once again rewarded for their impressive performance as Singam Subash Singh scored the third goal for the Blues. Subash received a wonderful through ball by Jan Stohanzl, which he finished off in style with a well-placed shot past the keeper.

Subash had even the chance to add another goal to his tally moments later when he intercepted a pass by Andres Felipe Gonzalez and found himself alone in front of the goalkeeper. But the Indian striker somehow missed the target by a whisker.

Pune City head coach Franco Colomba made two changes at the beginning of the second half with the hope to strengthen his side and to avoid further damage to his side.

Mumbai continued to dominate the match as the home side played a clever and calm game waiting for their chances to even increase the lead. The home fans had more reason to cheer as former Arsenal and Sweden star Freddie Ljungberg entered the pitch in the 68th minute.

But the Man of the Match was without a doubt Moritz who completed his hat-trick a few moments later. Moritz found his way to the box with a dynamic run and hit the target with a right-footed shot.

The D.Y. Patil Stadium errupted once again minutes before the final whistle as Frenchman Johan Letzelter scored the final goal of the match off a Nadong Bhutia pass.

Mumbai City FC underlined their title ambitions with an impressive 5-0 win against FC Pune City. Peter Reid’s team will face NorthEast United FC in their next game on October 24, while Pune City will host Zico’s FC Goa on October 26.
