A Sony Norde brace and a goal from Katsumi Yusa five minutes from time brought a halt to Bengaluru FC’s three-game unbeaten run as Mohun Bagan AC beat the Blues 4-1 in an I-League encounter at the Saltlake Stadium, in Kolkata, on Friday.

Any chance of salvaging a point was erased when Katsumi made the most of a cross that deflected off John Johnson to head home Bagan’s third of the night. The win took Bagan to second position on the table while Bengaluru dropped a place down to fourth.

Bengaluru FC couldn’t have asked for a better start when Chhetri nodded the Blues to an 8th minute lead. While the goal was anything but fancy, Eugene’s assist had ‘special’ all over it. Picking the ball on the right, the elegant midfielder glided down before nutmegging Dhanachandra Singh and sending a cross that beat ‘keeper Debjit Majumder’s leap leaving Chhetri to score without fuss.

Eugene then came close to getting a goal of his own, jinking his marker in the box only to see Majumder’s fingertips deny his shot.

But just when they seemed to be getting stuck into the game, Bengaluru needlessly gifted Bagan an equaliser in the 30th minute. Sitting pretty with possession and under no threat whatsoever, NS Manju played the ball back to Lalthuammawia Ralte. Where he should have simply hoofed it ahead, Ralte took a second more before playing a weak pass to John Johnson. A charging Norde made it to the ball before Johnson and with Ralte stranded, smashed home the equaliser.

Norde got his second in the 75th minute when, after being put through, he left Shankar in his wake before opening up his body and putting it beyond Ralte at the far post.

Ralte rounded off a woeful night with another error in the second minute of added time when he spilled what should have been a regulation collection from a Bikramjit Singh strike some twenty-five yards out.
