All India Football Federation condoles Santo Mitra’s death

All India Football Federation (AIFF)

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) condoles the death of former footballer Mr. Santo Mitra who passed after away a prolonged illness in Kolkata on Sunday (April 30, 2017) morning. He was 75.

Mitra who served as Kolkata’s Sheriff in 2009 was part of the Indian National Team squad in the 1968 Merdeka Cup but did not play any match. Besides, he was the Assistant Coach of the Indian National Team under Ciric Milovan from 1983-85 and was also the Project Director of the Indian U-23 Team which played in the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

AIFF President, Mr. Praful Patel in his message said: “It is sad to hear that Mr. Santo Mitra is no more. His contribution to Indian Football will never be forgotten. I share the grief.”

AIFF General Secretary, Mr. Kushal Das said: “Mr. Santo Mitra was a crafty Footballer and will be alive in his achievements. He has been the inspiration of so many Footballers. May He Rest in Peace.”

At the domestic level, Mitra played for East Bengal from 1965-72 and Captained the side in 1970. During his illustrious career with the Club Mitra won the Durand Cup and the Rovers Cup thrice (each), the IFA Shield four times, the Kolkata Football League four times, the Bordoloi Trophy twice and the Sait Nagjee Trophy once. He was also a member of the East Bengal squad in 1972 which remained unbeaten all throughout the season winning five trophies in the process.

He was Captained West Bengal to win the Santosh Trophy in 1969.
