Defending Women’s Bundesliga (Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga) champions VfL Wolfsburg registered an impressive 5-0 win against SGS Essen in their second match of the new 2018/19 season. The match was played under heavy rainfall at the Stadion Essen in Essen, Germany yesterday afternoon.

Both sides had kicked-off their league campaign with three points on Matchday 1 and SGS Essen were eager to stun top favourites Wolfsburg.

The first half turned out to be a goalless affair, while Wolfsburg struggled to finish off their chances. But the visitors, one of the best Women’s football teams in the world, proved their quality in the second half.

Denmark international Pernille Harder opened the score sheet in the 48th minute, while Ewa Pajor further increased the lead just 12 minutes later.

Nilla Fischer scored the third goal for Wolfsburg in the 70th minute, but the celebrations quickly lapsed into silence as SGS Essen goalkeeper Stina Johannes suffered a serious leg injury while trying to deny the Swedish international. The match stopped for around 15 minutes as the medicial staff took care of the 18-year-old youngster, before the ambulance rushed her to the hospital for a surgery on her fractured ankle.

The match continued and Essen conceded two goals as Pajor completed her hat-trick with two more goals (74′ & 75′).

Wolfsburg is now ranked 2nd in the latest Women’s Bundesliga standings just behind FC Bayern Munich, while SGS Essen dropped to 7th.

Wolfsburg host Bayern Munich in a top of the table clash next Sunday, while Essen travel to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
