Maria van Kortenhof: Rob Baan is very famous in the Netherlands

Netherlands Women's national team

The Netherlands Women’s Team may have got the better of their Indian counterparts in the first of the two international friendlies in Kolhapur. But their coach Maria van Kortenhof was candid enough to admit that her rivals matched them move for move.

“India played really good. As much as I was impressed and overwhelmed by the reception, I am thrilled by their football as well. I think they play to plan and pass the ball well. Their midfield is strong,” van Kortenhof said post match.

I think they need to play much more. They have the aptitude to pick up very fast. The girls were quick to recuperate after the early goal and did not get overawed by the occasion. They played god football and tried to score. This is very important,” added the coach.

Asked whether she has any idea about Indian football, van Kortenhof said: “I know that Wim Koevermans is the Head Coach of the Indian National Team. I know him personally. We both at some point of time were/are part of the Dutch Football Federation. I have interacted with him many times. And of course, who doesn’t know Mr. Rob Baan. He is very famous in the Netherlands.”

Maria van Kortenhof also said that the Dutch involvement in Indian football will help the latter immensely in the long run. “I hope that the players of India play like Holland someday! I maybe sounding unreal right now, but Indian football is in the right direction. You see coaches in Holland are well reputed all over the world. And the fact that Mr. Baan and Wim have taken up the cause, is great.”
