UEFA today announced the names of the three short-listed nominees for the UEFA Best Player in Europe 2012/13. This season marks the third edition of the award, which was born of an initiative by UEFA President Michel Platini, in partnership with the European Sports Media (ESM) group.

The three nominated players who received the most points overall from the second round of voting, in alphabetical order, are: Lionel Messi (ARG – FC Barcelona), Franck Ribéry (FRA – FC Bayern München) and Cristiano Ronaldo (POR – Real Madrid CF).

The jury of journalists from each of UEFA’s member associations will now cast their live votes in Monaco on Thursday 29 August 2013 during the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage draw using an electronic system to determine the outright winner from the three candidates.

UEFA today also announced the names of the three short-listed nominees who will compete for the title of UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe 2012/13, an award launched this season. The shortlist of the top three players who received the most points overall, in alphabetical order, is: Nadine Angerer (GER – 1. FFC Frankfurt), Lena Goessling (GER – VfL Wolfsburg) and Lotta Schelin (SWE – Olympique Lyonnais).

The shortlist of the top ten players was provided by the coaches of the teams taking part in UEFA Women’s EURO 2013, as well as the coaches of the clubs which participated in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. A jury composed of 18 journalists, each committed to supporting women’s football, and selected by ESM, have voted for the shortlist of the top three players and will cast their votes again to determine the winner. The award will be presented to the winner during the 2013/14 UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 32 and 16 draws, which will take place on 5 September 2013 at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.
