Salgaocar FC claim a 2-0 win against Mumbai FC

I-League: Salgaocar FC v Mumbai FC

Dudu Omagbemi scored in his fourth consecutive game since his return to India as Salgaocar FC coasted to a 2-0 victory over Mumbai FC at Tilak Maidan, Goa, on Sunday, in a Round 20 game of the Airtel I-League.

Dudu joined Salgaocar Football Club during the international transfer window, and since the I-League resumed last month, Salgaocar have been virtually unstoppable, winning all of their four matches. In all these games, Dudu’s goal has been a permanent fixture.

On Sunday, Mumbai FC seemed like they would give Salgaocar a fright as they kept the ball but were left to pay for defensive lapses in the end. Gilbert Oliveira opened the account in the 10th minute and the Dudu sealed all points in the 45th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse.

Without a win in five matches, Mumbai FC needed to win desperately and they seemed to be on the right track as they took control of the proceedings. However, the visitors fell behind in the tenth minute largely due to an ineffective defence.

A throw in from Rahul Kumar saw the defender receive the ball back and float it across the goal where goalkeeper Kunal Sawant struggled to read the flight. The ball hit the crossbar and rebounded back where Gilbert volleyed home, the ball hitting a defender before entering the net.

Mumbai FC were not threatening enough and most of their efforts were from long rangers that were never on mark. Once, Alfred Jayran came close to finding the mark but his powerful shot went straight into the hands of the rival goalkeeper.

Despite the lack of chances, Mumbai FC were still in the game but once again Khalid Jamil’s side were let down by poor defending, Sandesh Jhingan this time being the culprit. The defender casually passed the ball where Clifton Dias intercepted and fed Dudu on the platter. The Nigerian striker warded off challenge from his marker and then converted with some ease to give his team a 2-0 lead at the stroke of half time.

The win helped Salgaocar Football Club move to the third spot with 30 points, the same as Pune FC, who they lost to in the first leg, but are still four points behind leaders Bengaluru FC with six more matches left to be played.
