Mohammedan Sporting Club started their campaign in the 2017 Nike Premier Cup (AIFF U-16 Youth League 2016-17 – Final Round) with a 0-1 defeat to Shillong Lajong FC on Tuesday.

The Highlanders won via a second-half goal that was scored by Donboklang Lyngdoh at The Cooperage Stadium in Mumbai.

Mohammedan SC looked solid at the start, working their way neatly ahead. Surajuddin Munshi was the first to go close when his effort narrowly missed the target in the 8th minute.

MD. Giasuddin was also presented with a chance in the 16th minute only to be blocked by the rival keeper Lallawmkima. Skipper Debraj Rakshit then missed a chance when he headed wide off a corner.

Mohammedan Sporting kept on pushing forward and had a few more chances but it was the lack of finishing that let them down as first-half ended goalless.

The second-half was a similar story to the first as Mohammedan SC continued to dominate proceedings. However attackers ran out of ideas on entering the penetrative zone of Lajong.

While Mohammedan SC pressed high up, Lajong managed to take the lead against the run of the play at the other end when Lyngdoh slotted from Baiakara Swer’s pass in the 60th minute.

Mohammedan SC, afterwards, had numerous chances to equalise, but Lajong managed to hold on with some solid defending as the game ended 0-1.

Mohammedan Sporting Club now face Aizawl FC in a must win game on February 2, 2017 at the same venue.
