Shootout heartbreak for Chennaiyin FC ‘B’

Chennaiyin FC’s ‘B’ team lost 4-2 on penalties to Bengaluru DFA (BDFA) after it ended 2-2 in normal time in the quarter-finals of the Don Bosco – Fr. McFerran Trophy All India Football Tournament 2018 at Don Bosco Matriculation School, Red Hills here today. Both the Chennaiyin ‘B’ goals were scored by striker Aman Chetri in the first half.

The CFC ‘B’ line-up was unchanged from the side that beat Viva Chennai 2-1 in the previous round. After having dominated possession in the opening stages, Chennaiyin ‘B’ were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark for a foul on Bedashwor Singh in the area. Chetri sent the keeper the wrong way before slotting the penalty home to give his side a 1-0 lead.

BDFA fell further behind just before the interval, as Ajin Tom found Chetri in the six-yard box following a Fulganco Cardozo throw-in. Chetri neatly tucked away Tom’s perfect cross to double his and the team’s tally.

CFC ‘B’ began the second half well but BDFA halved the deficit before the hour mark. Narendra making it to 2-1 with a header after a cross from the right flank. BDFA, the current holders of the Don Bosco – Fr. McFerran Trophy, kept up the pressure and equalized in the 89th minute courtesy another header, this time by Shivakumar from a corner kick.

With the score 2-2 after normal time, the tie had to be decided by a penalty shootout. Bedashwor and Syed Suhail Pasha scored from the spot for CFC ‘B’ while Saurabh Meher and Chetri failed to convert their penalties. BDFA succeeded in netting four of their five spot-kicks to run out 4-2 winners in the shootout and progress to the semis of the competition.
