Corps of Signals edged past SCC Cavelossim 2-1 in a GFA Goa Professional League fixture played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Thursday.

U-20 player Allwyn Vaz scored first for the Cavelossim side but goals from Harshad Thube and Pawan Thakur sealed the victory for the Army side.

The initial minutes failed to see any attempts created by either of the sides as they kept swapping possession. The only potent attempt in the first quarter of the game was created by the Corps Harshad Thube whose powerful shot from the edge of the box went straight into the keeper’s arms.

In the 24th minute, Corps of Signals had the chance of shooting into the lead but both Harshad and Paul Victor failed to net it in from inside the box off Kejins K corner.

But the Cavelossim side capitalized onto the missed attempt by the Corps in the next minute as midfielder Ashley Araujo placed a perfect long back across to U-20 player Allwyn Vaz who made a swift run and tapped it past the keeper to give the south side a 1-0 lead in the game.

Being one goal down, the Corps team came out strong and had a couple of chances to equalize but failed to convert. They finally made it all square in the 36th minute as Joshley Gomes put in a long ball inside as Harshad Thube came in from out and placed his curling strong footer into the nylons to make it all square.

The army side scored another quick goal three minutes later as an unmarked Pawan Thakur placed his swift header into the goal to give his side a 2-1 lead. Harshad Thube was the architect of this goal as he placed in the ball as the Corps side went into the break with a lead over the Cavelossim team.

On changing sides, SCC Cavelossim had a good chance of equalizing in the 51st minute. Ashley Araujo’s cross found substitute Cayven Araujo whose goal bound shot was kept at bay by the strong keeper Binu Puruahothama.

The Cavelossim side continued to put pressure on the Corps defense but their forward Mathew Colaço failing to find support upfront.

The best chance for them to equalize came in the form of a penalty in the 75th minute after Romans MS brought down striker Samson Simoes inside the box but Moises D’Sa shot high from the spot.

The game witnessed some ugly turns in the final additional time as the Corps keeper tackled Samson Soares outside the box which earned the Cavelossim side a final attempt to equalize off a free kick.

To everyone’s surprise referee Shamraom Naik failed to pull out a booking for the keeper which evolved much fury among the Cavelossim dugout.

Moises D’Sa once again shot high from the free kick as the first half goals sealed a victory for the Corps of Signals.
