Gathering three wins in under a fortnight, the Indian women’s national team is on a winning spree and ahead of the clash against Indonesia tomorrow (January 30, 2019), head coach Maymol Rocky feels India’s chances are bright to add to their winning tally.

“We created a lot of chances in the first match against Indonesia. Had we taken them we could have won with a fancier scoreline,” said Maymol. India had defeated Indonesia in the first friendly on January 27 by three goals to nil in a match largely dominated by the Blue Tigresses.

“We have to take our chances and although we did have possession in and around the box, we lacked the necessary penetration. We have already started working on our finishing abilities and will try to make the most out of them (against Indonesia).”

“Indonesia are a team which are quick on the counter. We will have to be careful of that but I am confident that we can record another win. We have trained hard over the last few weeks and the team is performing really well,” she added.

Sanju, who was excellent down the left win against Indonesia, said, “In the first match Indonesia played with a lot of bodies around the box, making it difficult for us to create a clear goal scoring chance. However, we saw the chinks in their armour and found the win.”

“The second match against them will be challenging as they (Indonesia) will know our strengths and will make it tough for us to dominate possession,” Sanju added.

“We have to take our chances in front of goal,” said Roja Devi. “We know that is one of the things that we have to work upon and scoring goals wins you matches in football. We cannot get complacent and relax with our past wins, we have to grow together as a team and strive for excellence.”

The Indian women are preparing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifiers Round 2 that are slated from April 1-9, 2019.
