The German Football Association, Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB), and adidas have launched the new home and away kits for the Germany Women’s national team, as they gear up for the forthcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019.
The new home kit is a homage to the jersey of the 1989 UEFA Women’s EURO winning Germany squad. The continental title in 1989 is considered as one of the most significant moments in the history of the women’s national team and a breakthrough for Women’s football in the country. The 1989 UEFA Women’s EURO provided Women’s football a broad platform for the very first time, while increasing the reputation and obtaining acceptance. The 1989 UEFA EURO semifinal was also the first match of a German Women’s national team to be broadcasted live on television.
“It was important to us, that the DNA of the team and their history was visible through the colours and design” said Linn Sickert, Designer at adidas Football. “At the same time we edited them with new, digital filters – and interpreted them in a modern way. The black-red-golden graphic was used for more horizontal lines to make it even more dynamic.”
adidas designers developed the new design concepts in close correspondence with the national team players. “We wanted to ensure that the new jersey represents the values of the team and the players wear it with pride,” Sickert told.
“It was impressive to witness the obsession with details by the designers,” said Germany and FC Bayern Munich star Melanie Leupolz. “The graphics and colors on the chest remind of the jerseys the women’s and men’s team won major titles in 1989 and 1990. It is a good omen for our forthcoming task in France.”
The timeless home jersey is completed with black shorts and white socks – a color combination which fans of all generations always link with German natinoal teams.
The new away kit consists of a stylish maroon jersey, while the goalkeepers are set to wear blue kits.
The German Women’s national team will debut their new kit in a friendly match against Sweden on April 6.
