Germany’s Women’s Bundesliga 2 sides vote for season cancellation

2. Frauen-Bundesliga

The German FA, Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB), conducted an extraordinary session for all Women’s Bundesliga 2 (2. Frauen-Bundesliga) clubs on Friday to obtain the opinions of club managers on the 2019-20 season. The Women’s Bundesliga 2 had stopped its operations on March 15 due to COVID-19.

13 clubs voted for a cancellation of the 2019-20 season, while one team voted to pause the league until the season could be resumed. In case of a cacellation, twelve clubs would endorse the idea to increase the number of teams with promoted sides from the Regionalliga (3rd Divison), while no team would be handed a relegation. Two teams favoured the proposal to go into the 2020-21 season with the same teams plus two relegated sides from the top tier, the FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga.

The DFB Women’s Football Committee (DFB-Ausschuss für Frauen- und Mädchenfußball) and the DFB Women’s Bundesliga Committee (DFB-Ausschuss Frauen-Bundesligen) accepted the recommendation made the Women’s Bundesliga 2 clubs, while supporting a season cancellation. Both Committees also endorse the proposal made by the clubs to convert the current standings into the final table and to conclude the 2019-20 season with two promoted teams to the FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga, five promoted teams from the Regionalliga (3rd Division) and no relegation from the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga.

A final decision will be made at the DFB’s extraordinary meeting on May 25.
