Mohammedan Sporting’s new signings arrive in Kolkata

Mohammedan Sporting Club’s newest signings Anwar Ali and Himanshu Jangra have arrived in Kolkata to play the upcoming 2020/21 2nd Division League qualifiers on Saturday morning.

Both players were welcomed by Club General Secretary Sk. Wasim Akram and Finance Secretary Sharique Ahmed at the airport.

Anwar, who scored a spectacular free-kick to help India U-20s defeat Argentina U-20s 2-1 in the COTIF Cup 2018, making a return to professional football after losing a year of football due to his heart condition.

Now having completed his recovery the 20-year-old defender, who made a big impression with Indian Arrows during the 2017-18 I-League, is back to full fitness and raring to get back on the field.

“I am delighted to sign for Mohammedan Sporting Club. It’s a big club with top players and passionate fans.” said Anwar.

“I can’t wait to get started now. I believe it can be a special season for all of us and I will be working hard to produce the kind of performances that will help us achieve what we are aiming for,” he further added.

Himanshu is a product of Minerva Punjab academy, he joined Minerva Punjab in 2016 after being selected during a Trial in Chandigarh.

He made a name for himself in the 2017/18 Hero Sub Junior I-League where he scored an impressive haul of 18 goals which attracted Indian National team Scouts.

The youngster continued his prolific form in the National leagues by scoring 9 goals and helping his team to win the Hero Junior I-Leagues 2018-19 title.

Later in 2019, Himanshu was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player in the SAFF Under 15 Championship. He scored two consecutive hat-tricks and secured the title for India.

Himanshu featured for Punjab FC’s reserves side in the 2020 I-League 2nd Division where he scored two goals in a solitary appearance against AU Rajasthan. Impressing everyone by his performance, the attacker earned promotion to the senior side playing in the I-League where he made five appearances at the age of 15.

Commenting on the transfer, Himanshu said: “I am really happy that Mohammedan Sporting Club showed interest in me. The club management are investing a lot in youngsters which is very good for me and my career. I am looking forward to playing for them and I am sure that it will be a great opportunity for me to grow further.”

Speaking on the new signing, Mr. Akram said, “ I am quite happy to welcome both Anwar and Himanshu to the club. Anwar needs less introduction as not too long ago, he was thought of to be one of the best young prospects in India. We are confident that Mohammedan Sporting Club is the place for Anwar to come back strong and make an impact in India once again. I am certain that Anwar will work hard to get his names in the headlines once again.”

“Himanshu is a player who has an extremely bright future and if he can play to his potential. Though only 16, his speed is impressive. We hope to develop him further in the coming years,” he added.
