FSV Gütersloh 2009 have cemented their ambitions in the 2nd Division Women’s Bundesliga with an impressive 4-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg II on Wednesday evening.

Gütersloh had registered a 3-0 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach last Sunday when the league resumed its 2020/21 campaign after a several months long COVID-19 break. Head coach Steffen Enge’s team displayed another stellar performance last night when they played host to German women’s football giants Wolfsburg’s reserves team behind closed doors at the Tönnies-Arena in Rheda Wiedenbrück.

The home side was in full control of the game right from kick off, while putting early pressure on their opponents. Annalena Rieke opened the score sheet for Gütersloh in the 36th minute when captain Marina Hermes set up the forward at the edge of the box. Rieke fired a well-placed shot into the top corner to give her team a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Rieke further increased the lead with her second goal of the match, when she headed home a Nina Zimmer cross in the 56th minute.

Gütersloh looked safe to win the match and claim three points, but they were down to ten players when Melanie Schuster was sent off with a second yellow card. Wolfsburg’s Natasha Kowalski put the resulting free-kick into the back of the net to reduce the margin and to give the visitors new hope.

But Gütersloh didn’t lose their focus and reacted with another goal when Celina Baum slotted home with a brilliant chip over Wolfsburg goalkeeper Melanie Wagner.

Marina Hermes put the final nail in the coffin with a powerful long-range shot to secure a well-deserved 4-1 for FSV Gütersloh 2009.

Gütersloh are scheduled to take on FC Carl Zeiss Jena in another home game on Saturday.
