Gerry Weber Open 2011 gets underway

The GERRY WEBER OPEN 2011 tennis tournament started today in Halle (Westfalen), Germany with the Qualifiers. The highlight of Day 1 was the qualifier between Sergei Bubka, the son of legendary pole vaulter Sergey Bubka, and Thomas Muster.

The former world #1 player from Austria announced his retirement from retirement last summer and he gave a good fight to his Ukrainian counterpart in the match today. But Bubka had the better end and advanced to the second round of the qualifiers.

Tennis fans in Germany are looking forward to some world-class tennis in the coming days with player like Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, Gael Monfils, Mikhail Youzhny, Thommy Haas and many more taking part in the grass court tournament.

The doubles competion in Halle has a long tradition in hosting Indian players. This year’s edition will see the “Indo-Pak Express”, Rohann Bopanna (IND) and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi (PAK),  in action. Leander Paes might also take part in the doubles competition, but a confirmation is still pending.
