German giants FC Bayern Munich will face the Indian national team in the “Audi Football Summit” on January 10, 2012. The match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi will be another highlight in the long and strong association between the Bundesliga outfit and Indian football.
Bayern Munich started their on-pitch activities in India in the same year, when the Bavarians visited Kolkata with their 2nd team. The team coached by Hermann Gerland and his assistant Gerd Müller took part in the 111th IFA Shield 2005.
The Bayern team arrived in Kolkata on November 29, 2005 and they were welcomed with huge fan and media interest. The presence of former Germany striker Gerd Müller in the “City of Joy” even increased the interest in the visiting team and their activities in Kolkata.
The Bayern contingent was able to soak in the atmosphere at the flood-lit stadium for a very first time and the team was able to have a look at their semi-final opponents.
FC Bayern Munich II took on Mohammedan Sporting Club in the semis of the 111th IFA Shield 2005 in-front of approximately 35,000 fans on December 2, 2005. The visitors had their difficulties to find the target against an in-form Gopal Das in the Mohammedan Sporting goal. It was only in the 82nd minute of the match, when a goal by substitute Stefan Fürstner gave FC Bayern Munich II the lead. Michael Görlitz doubled the lead in the 90th minute to seal Bayern’s spot in the final.
Bayern thereby became the second European team to win the prestigious competition, while young Bolivian José-Luis Ortiz also created history. The Bayern youngster became the first foreigner to score more than one goal in the IFA Shield finals.
But the German club didn’t restrict their journey to India to their assignments on the pitch. The Germans used the chance to visit the famous “Missionary of Charity”, a congregation established by Mother Teresa.
Bayern Munich handed over a donation to Sister Nirmala, the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity and paid their respect to the work of the congregation.
This first historic visit by a Bayern team was just the beginning of many more activities in India by the Germans…
