Assam crowned Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy champions

The Assam U16 team has won the 34th Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy 2012 in a final played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Friday. Assam won the final of the U16 National Championship 2-0 against Chandigarh.

Assam took the initiative right from the kick-off and they were not lucky to convert two easy opportunities in the first ten minutes itself. But Assam were eventually rewarded in the 11th minute, when Milan Basumataray slotted home from close range after being fed by Lalzeiram Hmar from the right flank. The Northeasterners maintained the lead till the interval.

Chandigarh came back with more purpose in the second half and they were denied by Assamese goalkeeper Danswrang Basumatary on several occasions. Samuel Lalmuanpuia, Vikram Singh and Robin Chhetri found their master in Basumatary to kept a clean sheet.

Zeherui Islam sealed the win in the last minute of the game with a tap over Chandigarh keeper Zothanmawia.

India star striker Sunil Chhetri distributed the prizes to the new champions and the runners-up after the game.
