Football-crazy Kerala is looking forward to the opening of its new world-class multi-purpose stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Kariavattom Stadium in the capital city of the South Indian state is currently under construction and it expected to be ready by the end of 2013 according to the latest reports.

The 50,000-seater stadium is built by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS), an Indian infrastructure development and finance company based in Mumbai. The stadium is built to host football and cricket matches as well as events like concerts.

The Kariavattom Stadium will feature indoor sport facilities for basketball, handball, swimming, table tennis and volleyball, besides offering a convention centre, an exhibition hall, restaurants, a club house and retail space.

The construction work is done on a total land of 37 acres, while the rough estimate of the project is Rs. 160 crore.
