Goa-India thrill fans with their stellar performance

The Goa-India football team started its Lusofonia Games campaign with a 2-1 win over Mozambique at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, Vasco on Monday.

The first few minutes of the game was dominated by Mozambique who made an attempt on the Indian goal in the very first minute. Mozambique used their player’s physique to slow their counterparts down but there was no stopping the home team once they gained ground. ASD Cape Town star Brandon Fernandes created various opportunities for the team and even took a few stunning free-kicks in a game which didn’t see any goals at half-time.

The rejuvenated Goa-India team of coach Francisco Neto dominated the second half and thrilled a packed audience with some entertaining football. Umesh scored a stunner in the 53rd minute from outside the box that created a roar in the stadium. Captain Mandar Desai then sealed the game for the home team in the 60th minute with a solo run down the left flank before he put the ball past the keeper. Mozambique’s Aleandre Guambe scored a consolation goal in the 83rd minute.

Speaking at the post match press conference, Goa-India coach Francesco Neto, said, “We have had a difficult day playing against a higher ranked country. We will now enjoy this beautiful moment and practice hard for Wednesday as we are sure Mozambique will improve and make it another memorable match.”

He went on to thank all the fans at the stadium and dedicated the victory to the football frenzy Goans. Coach Neto was happy with the team’s performance and said that the boys have the quality to play in the I-League.

Mozambique coach Augusto Matine admitted that this wasn’t the best game for his team and they will display an improved performance during the next match against Goa-India on Wednesday.

Goa-India captain Mandar Dessai was happy with his team’s performance and dedicated his goal to the fans who supported the team throughout the match.
