Goal of the Month – January 2014: Thiago Alcántara

The German “Goal of the Month” (Tor des Monats) is a monthly award given away by German national tv broadcaster “Das Erste” as part of its football show “Sportschau”.

Football fans have the chance to cast their votes via internet, SMS and telephone for the best goals scored in the Bundesliga, German national team matches and major international competitions e.g. the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

The first “Goal of the Month” voting in Germany took place in March 1971 and it has established itself as a prestigious award in German football. The twelve winners of the “Goal of the Month” compete for the “Goal of the Year” award at the end of each year.

German international Lukas Podolski lead the all-time winner’s list with ten “Goal of the Month” awards to his name. Jürgen Klinsmann, Mario Basler, Klaus Fischer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge complete the “Top 5”.

The winner of last month has been announced during the “Sportschau” show and I would like to present you the “Goal of the Month”.

And the winner of the “Goal of the Month” for January 2014 is…

Thiago Alcántara (FC Bayern Munich)
January 29 v VfB Stuttgart
