Sporting Clube de Goa hammer Dempo SC to complete Goan double


Sporting Clube de Goa completed a historic double after overpowering Dempo SC 3-1 in the final of the 2014 GFA Knock Out Tournament at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Thursday. Dempo led 1-0 at the interval, through a Romeo Fernandes strike.

Sporting Clube de Goa scored three goals in a blistering seven minute spell, to secure victory with goals coming from Boima Karpeh, Ogba Kalu and Beevan D’Mello.

Sporting Clube de Goa had the greater chances in the first half, but was kept out by the heroics of the Dempo custodian and captain Subhashish Roy Chowdhury.

Ogba Kalu was the closest to opening the scoring for the Flaming Oranje with an one-on-one opportunity on the half hour mark, but his effort was saved. Two minutes later it was Dempo who took the lead through the young Romeo Fernandes.

Changing over, Sporting Clube de Goa was resilient in their mission and finally made headway, when Dempo defender Selwyn Fernandes handled the ball in the penalty area. From the resulting spot kick Subhashish Roy Chowdhury produced a wonderful save to deny Ogba Kalu.

Two minutes later in a similar position, Selwyn Fernandes handled the ball yet again. This time Boima Jerry Karpeh stepped up to net his 28th goal in all competitions for Sporting Goa.

From this moment on, Sporting Clube de Goa piled on the pressure and took the lead through Kalu who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner, after Beevan’s shot was charged down by Selwyn.

With eleven minutes left on the clock, Sporting Clube de Goa’s Beevan sliced the ball into the roof of the net, after Dempo failed to clear from a corner.

After the match Sporting Clube de Goa were presented the trophies for winnng the 2014 GFA Knock Out Tournament and also the Airtel Goa Pro League which they won earlier in the season.
