Germany become first federation to play 100 FIFA World Cup matches

Germany will become the first federation to play 100 matches in the FIFA World Cup when they take on Portugal later today.

The “Mannschaft” played their very first FIFA World Cup match against Belgium on May 27, 1934. The match was a Round 1 encounter of the 1934 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Germany won the match 5-2 courtesy to a hat-trick by Conen and goals by Kobierski and Siffing.

Germany featured in 17 out of 19 FIFA World Cup tournaments, having won a total of three World Cups besides finishing runners-up four times and third on four occasions.
