Bastian Schweinsteiger has been named the new captain of the German national team.

Germany coach Joachim Löw announced his decision today at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Germany v Argentina friendly match scheduled to take place tomorrow.

The 30-year-old Bayern Munich star will be the successor of Philipp Lahm who resigned from international football after leading the German team to glory at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

“Bastian is a true leader. He has has always shouldered responsibility for the national team – on and off the field,” Löw told  at the press conference.

“I have a lot of trust in Bastian. But not only me, the whole team management does so. Above all he unifies all players behind him – irrespective of the age or the club they play for. I know for sure: Bastian is always there when we need him.”

“Bastian Schweinsteiger will be a great and worthy captain of our national team,” Löw concluded.

Bastian Schweinsteiger will miss Germany’s encounter against Argentina due to an injury which has already forced him to miss the first matches in the Bundesliga. Manuel Neuer will be the captain in the absence of Schweinsteiger.

Meanwhile, Löw has also revealed the name of his new assistant coach in form of Thomas Schneider. Schneider, former head coach of VfB Stuttgart, will replace Hansi Flick who has been promoted as the new Director of Sport at the German FA (DFB).
