Sporting Clube de Goa hammer Portugal MP to win Goodwill Cup

Sporting Clube de Goa Veterans defeated Portugal MP’s 4-1 in the final of the SCG Goodwill Cup at Don Bosco Ground in Panjim on Thursday.

Sporting Goa took the lead when Roque Carneiro headed in a cross swung in by Mathew Costa. Changing over, Sporting Goa doubled their lead when Kiran Chaukachi dribbled round the goalkeeper and tapped in after being played through by Pratap Samant.

Clyde Dias managed to pull a goal back for the visitors after receiving a neat pass from Olvin Cardoza. Sporting Goa continued to display elegance in the attack and finished the game strongly with Clifford Chukwuma getting his name on the score sheet, before Kiran completed his brace.

The previous day, Sporting Clube de Goa Veterans defeated Lusiofonia XI 5-3, while Portugal MP’s overcame Don Bosco Past Pupils 3-2 to qualify for the final.

After the game Sporting Goa received the winner’s trophy, while Portugal MP’s took home the runners-up trophy.

Sara Fernandes who incidentally was the only woman on the pitch received the Hero of the Match award. Former India Captain and Arjuna Awardee, Bruno Coutinho received a special token for his super contribution in the competition for Sporting Goa Veterans.

Hon. Consul of Portugal in Goa, Rui Baceira was the Chief Guest. Sporting Clube de Goa competitions director Angelo Albuquerque, Don Bosco past Pupils President Edward Noronha and Clube Nacional President Tony Dias were also present on the occasion, among other dignitaries.

Sporting Clube de Goa organised the event to harness the power of sport to promote peace and harmony. Earlier in the season Sporting Goa conducted a similar exhibition friendly with an Invitational team from Nigeria.
