Germany striker Mario Gomez
VfL Wolfsburg have announced the signing of Germany international Mario Gomez on Wednesday. Gomez will return to the Bundesliga after spending three seasons abroad at ACF Fiorentina and a successful loan spell with Turkish Süper Lig side Beşiktaş Istanbul last season.
The 31 year old striker will be officially presented to the public at a press conference tomorrow (August 18) and he is set to join his new team mates for a first training session under the watchful eyes of head coach Dieter Hecking in the afternoon.
“We looked at the possibility of signing Mario Gomez during the winter, so we are all the happier that it has now worked out. Mario is a striker of international cAlass, who, aside from his playing qualities, also brings an immense amount of experience to our team. As an ambitious player, he fits in here perfectly,” said VfL Wolfsburg’s Sporting Director Klaus Allofs in an official statement released on the club website.
Head coach Dieter Hecking commented: “Mario is the best German striker in my opinion. His success and goal-tally speaks for itself. In addition, he possesses leadership qualities and has a clear vision, which is congruent with our own. He suits our team and this club perfectly.”
“I am really looking forward to this this new challenge. The talks held with Klaus Allofs and Dieter Hecking were very good. I am delighted to be returning to the Bundesliga. I want to return to the international stage along with VfL and I firmly believe we will achieve that,” Mario Gomez told in a first statement.
Gomez has made a total of 236 appearances in Bundesliga, scoring 138 goals for VfB Stuttgart and FC Bayern Munich. The 2007 German Footballer of the Year has earned 68 senior international caps for Germany, scoring 29 goals for “Die Mannschaft” so far.
