Goa Football Association backs tourney for yesteryear stars

The Goa Football Association (GFA) has decided to extend all its support to the first ever tournament involving top teams of the state which will be held at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, in August as a fundraiser for Goa’s forgotten sporting heroes.

Presiding over the meeting of the Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons (AWES) held on Wednesday, July 19th at Duler, the President, Mr. Elvis Gomes said “The GFA is pleased to support such initiatives. Our former stars brought laurels to the state and it is imperative that we don’t forget them. This tournament will again bring them in the spotlight.”

The meeting was attended by the GFA Hon. General Secretary, Mr. Welvin Menezes, GFA Executive Committee Members Adv. Dominic Pereira, Mr. Raju Banavalikar, Mr. Patrick D’Souza, Representatives of Goa’s top clubs and former stars Mr. Nicholas Pereira, Mr. Bernard Pereira, Mr. Zacharias Fernandes, Mr. Subash Sinari, Mr. Tiburcio D’Souza, Mr. Salvador Fernandes.

Speaking further, the President thanked AWES for giving the GFA an opportunity to help the former greats and said that the GFA is shortly going to start work on compiling the contribution of various players who donned colours for our clubs and the state.
