AWES to honour Goa’s 1977 Women’s football team

The Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons (AWES) in collaboration with Agassaim Youth Club will felicitate Goa’s Women’s football team which won the Women’s National Football Championship for the first time in 1977.

The felicitation will be held on November 6, 2017, exactly 40 years after the team triumphed by defeating Bengal 3-0 at the Panjim Gymkhana ground. The function will be held at the St Lawrence Church hall, Agassaim, 7pm.

All members of the women’s team who are currently in Goa and those instrumental in establishing and promoting women’s football in Goa are being invited. Players/officials who are abroad will be represented by their family members.

“Goa’s triumph at the Women’s Nationals held at home is not just memorable but historic. These players were our heroes and will continue to remain in our minds forever,” said AWES president Avertano Furtado.

AWES, led by the former fisheries minister, has been championing the cause of elder sportspersons and recently organised a successful fund-raising All-India football tournament at the Duler Football Stadium in Mapusa.
