FIFA World Cup 2018

Winning the World Cup is easier than retaining the position at the top

Germany bowed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on Wednesday marking a historic World Cup exit by the reigning World Champions.

My thoughts on the humiliation, which is also a reality check:

“The biggest challenge for a World Champion is to realise that it’s even a bigger challenge to retain the position at the top than actually winning the World Cup. Germany went into the World Cup with the slogan ‘Best never rest’, but Joachim Löw’s team never interiorized the same. Germany can only blame themselves for a historic World Cup exit and it should be a major lesson for everyone. Complacency and over-confidence will always result in disappointment.”
