SGS Essen thrash MSV Duisburg 6-0 in Women’s Bundesliga derby

SGS Essen has registered an impressive 6-0 win against rivals MSV Duisburg in a Women’s Bundesliga (Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga) match at the Stadion Essen on Sunday. The distance between the city of Essen and the city of Duisburg is less than 20 km which added a special derby flavour to the match despite the clear result.

Favourites SGS Essen had their difficulties in the first half, but they broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when MSV Duisburg’s Kathleen Radtke deflected Germany international Lea Schüller’s header into her own goal.

Marina Hegering increased the margin with a stoppage-time goal to hand the home side a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Essen improved their game in the second half and easily dominated the proceedings.

Lea Schüller (55′ & 76′) demonstrated her top form with a brace, while substitutes Sarah Freutel (61′) and Ramona Petzelberger (71′) also added their names to the score sheet to secure SGS Essen a 6-0 win in the Ruhr Valley derby.

SGS Essen are placed 4th in the Women’S Bundesliga standings with 24 points from 12 matches. 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam have the same number of points, but rank 3rd due to a better goal difference.

VfL Wolfsburg (34 points) stay at the top of the table ahead of FC Bayern Munich (29 points) as the league go into the final matchday next Sunday (December 16) before the traditional winter break in German football. The Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga will then return to action on February 17, 2019 with Matchday 13.
