SGS Essen hold champions VfL Wolfsburg to a goalless draw

SGS Essen has managed to hold Women’s Bundesliga (Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga) champions and top favourites VfL Wolfsburg to a goalless draw in a fixture at the AOK Stadion in Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Wolfsburg missed out a chance to further increase their lead in the league standings, while Essen led by their Indian-origin captain Manjou Wilde climb to third position with today’s draw.

Second-positioned FC Bayern Munich has reduced their margin to Wolfsburg with a comfortable 4-0 away win at MSV Duisburg in another fixture of the day. Mandy Islacker (2x), Lina Magul and Sara Däbritz scored the goals for Bayern.

SC Freiburg (2-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1-0 against SV Werder Bremen) have also won their matches, while two fixtures, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim vs 1. FFC Frankfurt and SC Sand vs 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, were postponed due to heavy snowfall.

Wolfsburg top the standings with 35 points ahead of Bayern Munich (32 points) and SGS Essen (25 points) after the final matchday before the traditional winter break.

The Women’s Bundesliga will return to action on February 17, as FC Bayern Munich host VfL Wolfsburg in a top of the table clash. SGS Essen aim to continue their impressive season with a home fixture against Hoffenheim.
