Algarve Cup final cancelled as Italy withdraw from competition

The Algarve Cup 2020 final between the Women’s national teams of Germany and Italy has been cancelled as the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) withdrew its team from the competition on Tuesday evening. The decision was made by the FIGC due to Italy’s heightened entry restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

“We would have liked to play the final, but can accept the decision made by the Italians,” said Germany WNT head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg in a statememt on the German FA (DFB) website. “The current situation is difficult and we all need to stand together in order to weather these tough times.”

The Algarve Cup final was scheduled to be played today evening at the Vista Municipal Stadium in Parchal, Portugal.
