The world of football mourns the death of an all-time legend of the beautiful game: Argentina’s 1986 FIFA World Cup winning captain Diego Armando Maradona has died at the age of 60.
Maradona suffered a heart attack at his Buenos Aires home on Wednesday, November 25.
Argentine president Alberto Fernandez has declared three days of national mourning to pay tribute to the former attacking midfielder and manager who had a successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier this month.
“You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all,” said Fernandez in a first statement. “Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives.”
Argentina and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi said: “A very sad day for all Argentines and football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal. I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends.”
Brazil legend Pelé reacted with a tribute on social media: “What sad news. I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend. There is still much to be said, but for now, may God give strength to family members. One day, I hope we can play ball together in the sky.”
