AFC congratulates AIFF on Indian Super League launch

Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, President, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) congratulated the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on the successful launch of the inaugural edition of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL).

In a letter to the All India Football Federation, Sheikh Salman said: “I would like to congratulate you on the launch of the new franchise-based Indian Super League.”

“I am confident that this eight-team competition with a total of 61 matches; will increase the popularity of the sport in India and will create a strong fan base for the Indian domestic football.”

He further wrote: “The knowledge and experience gained form this competition will also help the clubs in raising their profile and will strengthen the national team in future.”

“I would like to wish all the eight teams the very best and wishing you all the success for this new venture.”

The Hero Indian Super League kicked-off at the majestic Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata on October 12 with Atletico de Kolkata beating Mumbai City FC 3-0 on the inaugural day.

Besides the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, AIFF President Praful Patel, Nita Ambani, Mukesh Ambani; a galaxy of stars including Amitabh Bachchan attented the glittering Opening Ceremony as did Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham amongst others.

Speaking on the occasion, Patel said: “We intend to take this game to every nook and corner of the country. On behalf of AIFF, I would like to specially thank Nita Ambani, IMG-Reliance and Star for the wonderful work and team effort which they have put in and I can assure you that under the leadership of Nita Ambani there’s going to be left no stone unturned to make this ISL a super success.”
