The Chennaiyin FC ‘B’ team succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Jamshedpur FC Reserves at the SSN College Ground in Chennai today. There were two changes in the CFC ‘B’ starting lineup as left-back Ajin Tom and winger Reamsochung ‘Remy’ Aimol replaced Joseph Lalsanglura and Bibin Boban respectively.

Both teams began on an even keel in the first ten minutes but Jamshedpur took the lead with their first real chance as Gourav Mukhi tapped in the opener. CFC keeper Sayak Barai made a couple of superb saves from close range to keep JFC out but couldn’t stop the rebound falling Gourav’s way, who rolled it into an empty net in the 11th minute.

Remy and Joysana Singh were potent on the wings for CFC ‘B’ but their final ball was lacking. Just past the halfway mark in the first half, Zonunmawia picked out Chennaiyin skipper Prosenjit Chakraborty with a delightful chipped through ball, but the latter’s snapshot was parried away by the JFC keeper Harpreet Singh.

CFC ‘B’ had another good chance to draw level on the break with half an hour gone when Prosenjit rolled an enticing ball into B. Rohmingthanga’s path. The Mizo striker cut into the box and beat an opponent before firing at goal from a tight angle. The JFC goalie was equal to it as he tipped the effort over.

CFC ‘B’ continued their onslaught on the JFC goal with half-time approaching. Prosenjit’s cross-cum-shot from the right was stopped from creeping in at the far post by a flailing Harpreet. From the resulting corner, CFC defender Saurabh Meher sent his header just over the bar.

But the task got difficult for CFC when JFC scored their second in the 45th minute. It was a soft goal from the hosts’ point of view as Harsha Parui ran in behind the CFC defence and netted with keeper Sayak wrong-footed.

Then in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Prosenjit fired a free-kick directly at the keeper from the edge of the box after Rohmingthanga’s threatening run was stopped illegally. The first period drew to a close with Chennaiyin trailing by two.

Bedashwor Singh made way for Hendry Antonay for CFC ‘B’ at the interval. Ten minutes into the second period, Bedashwor set up Rohmingthanga at the edge of the box but the latter’s shot was just off-target. With the hosts looking to pull a goal back, JFC posed a threat on the break, with goalscorer Gourav striking the post on the hour mark.

Striker Syed Suhail Pasha and midfielder Lalliansanga Renthlei were thrown into the mix, replacing B. Rohmingthanga and Abhishek Nair for CFC ‘B’. The substitutes linked up well but the end product was still missing.

Chennaiyin made decent inroads in the closing stages but the Jamshedpur defence stood resolute, the visitors running out 2-0 victors in the end. Chennaiyin FC ‘B’ make their next Second Division League appearance when they host Langsning FC at the SSN College Ground, Chennai on Saturday 21st April 2018 at 4 PM.
