Arminia Bielefeld gains promotion to the 2nd Division Bundesliga

DSC Arminia Bielefeld has gained promotion to the 2nd Division Bundesliga with a 1-0 win against rivals VfL Osnabrück in a German 3rd Division match at the SchücoArena on Saturday.

The club from the Westphalia region was ranked 2nd in the league table with 73 points to their tally ahead of the match today, while the visitors from Osnabrück were just behind them on the 3rd spot with 70 points. Coach Stefan Krämer and his team knew that a win would seal their dream to return to the 2nd Division with just one match left after the derby today.

And Bielefeld did no mistake in front of a full capacity crowd of 26,500 fans at their very own SchücoArena. Bielefeld dominated the match from the word “go”. But neither the hosts nor the visitors were able to open the score sheet in the first half.

It needed an excellent counter-attack to break the deadlock, when Sebastian Hille put a perfect header past keeper Manuel Riemann to give Arminia the lead in the 56th minute. Bielefeld, riding high on the lead and the fantastic support by their fans, continued to put pressure on Osnabrück.

But Bielefeld had to settle for a 1-0 win which was more than enough to hand them a promotion to the 2nd Divison Bundesliga.

The celebrations kicked-off right after the final whistle with players, officials and fans giving vent to their feelings. The former 1st Division Bundesliga side had to experience major financial crunch in the last few years which brought them to the verge of bankruptcy. But a new administration and proper planning helped the club to restructure and to gain the best results with their limited ressources.
