UEFA Champions League trophies arrive in Munich

Michel Platini and Christian Ude

The UEFA has handed over the trophies of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Women’s Champions League to the German City of Munich, the host of this season’s finals. The special function was held at the Altes Rathaus, Marienplatz on Friday.

UEFA President Michel Platini handed over the UEFA Champions League trophy to the Mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy to Christine Strobl, the Mayor of Munich for Sport.

The ceremony was conducted in the presence of the 2012 UEFA Women’s Champions League final ambassador Steffi Jones, the 2012 UEFA Champions League final ambassador Paul Breitner and UEFA Champions Festival ambassador Willy Sagnol. Representatives of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League winners FC Barcelona, the 2010/11 UEFA Women’s Champions League winners Olympique Lyonnais, the German FA (DFB) and German giants FC Bayern Munich were also present at the function.

“This annual cup handover event symbolises the start of the countdown to the season’s finals,” said Michel Platini.

“I would like to thank the DFB for all their help in delivering what I believe will be yet another fantastic celebration of European football, this time in Munich, a city with such a strong football heritage,” the UEFA President continued.

“I am delighted to hand over this iconic silverware to the City of Munich today, and I trust they will look after the trophies with care – as I know they will look after all the visitors to the festival and the finals,” he added.

The trophies of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Women’s Champions League will now go on a tour of the city, which will take them to key venues and finish with a special open top bus parade on May 14.

Fans interested to attend the “Trophy Tour” can check the complete schedule on UEFA’s official website www.uefa.com.

The 2012 UEFA Women’s Champions League and 2012 UEFA Champions League finals hosted will be played on May 17 and 19 respectively.
