Rummenigge: It would be the biggest triumph in our history

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

German club football is desperately crying for an European title after a gap of eleven years without continental silverware. FC Bayern Munich won the UEFA Champions League trophy in an exciting final against Valencia CF in 2001 and the Bundesliga giants could be ones to win the same competition once again, when they take on Chelsea FC on May 19.

The final will take place at Munich’s Allianz Arena and the excitement is growing on a daily basis with German football fans counting down the days, the hours and the minutes for the kick-off. The UEFA Champions League final will be the season ending highlight of club football and it could bring Bayern’s 2011/12 campaign to a successful end after finishing runners-up in the Bundesliga and the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) final scheduled for May 12.

Talking to German daily “Abendzeitung”, Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told that his club would create history, if they win the final against Chelsea. “It would be historically the biggest triumph in the club’s history – especially as we play at home,” the former German international stated.

“We are currently pushed into the role of the favourites, but this Chelsea side reminds me of the successful Bayern team of 1975 and 1976. We played rubbish in the league, but the team was at its best, when they played Real Madrid, Leeds or St. Etienne in the finals,” Rummenigge continued.

Rummenigge is expecting a tough match against the EPL side and he feels that this final will be the last chance to win the UEFA Champions League title for several Chelsea stars due to their age. “The generation of Lampard, Terry and Drogba has an expiry date. And the club owner Roman Abramovich is desperately asking for this title since he started to spend his first pennies into this club.”

The Allianz Arena is waiting for the German-British battle for the UEFA Champions League trophy and we may witness, how the words of English legend Gary Lineker turn into reality once again: “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.”
