The Netherlands squad were subjected to monkey chants during an open practice session in Krakow yesterday. Several hundred people out of a total of 25,000 spectators targeted the black players in the Dutch squad.

A spokeswoman of the Dutch team confirmed the incidence and it has been also confirmed that the players moved their training drills to the other side of the ground on the instructions of the captain Mark van Bommel.

“It is a real disgrace, especially after getting back from Auschwitz that you are confronted with this. We will take it up with UEFA and if it happens at a match we will talk to the referee and ask him to take us off the field,” van Bommel told the media.

The UEFA has denied any racist abuse at the Netherlands training session and one can only hope that the European Championship won’t end in turmoil…
