Luís Figo to visit Goa this week

Portuguese football icon Luís Figo is set to visit the Indian state of Goa in a few days as part of the Youth Champions League which kicked-off today.

The former FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan star will be part of an exhibition match between a GOA XI and an INDIA XI at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on November 1.

Figo will lead the GOA XI comprising of youngsters selected at the Youth Champions League, while Churchill Brothers’ Brazilian star Roberto ‘Beto’ Mendes Silva will be the captain of the INDIA XI. Both teams are expected to be further strengthened by various I-League players.

“We have tentatively decided to name the home team as Figo Goa XI,” a spokesperson from the Mumbai-based organisers Red9 Events told.

“He will play for a minimum of 20 minutes, although the exact duration of the match is still being worked out.”

The 39 year old former Portugal skipper will be a special guest and the brand ambassador of the inaugural Youth Champions League.

Figo is the third international ex-superstar footballer to visit India within ten days, after the visits of Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona to Kerala [+read more] and former Brazil skipper Carlos Dunga to Kolkata.

The exhibition match will be rounded off with show performances by Remo Fernandes, Sonia Jaffer, Lorna Cordeiro and many more.
