Ranti Martins on fire in a 10-1 demolition of United Sikkim

Prayag United SC v United Sikkim FC

Nigerian star striker Ranti Martins Soleye scored five goals to hand his club Prayag United SC a historic 10-1 win against United Sikkim FC in an I-League encounter on Saturday.

The match paved the way for a spectacular debut for Prayag’s new Dutch coach Eelco Schattorie who took over the reigns at the club only yesterday, while assistant coach Anjan Nath was in-charge of the team selection for the match.

Prayag United opened the scoresheet when Ranti Martins Soleye hit the target at Kolkata’s Saltlake Stadium in the 3rd minute. But United Sikkim levelled the scoreline just two minutes later as Nima Tamang found the back of the net.

But the hosts were on fire and they increased the pace to put the Sikkimese side under heavy pressure. Ranti Martins Soleye put Prayag back into the lead in the 16th minute and former Costa Rican World Cupper Carlos Hernández Valverde scored a brace (22nd & 35th) to underline the dominance.

Ranti made it 5-1 for his side in the 39th minute and secured the hosts a comfortable lead at half-time.

Prayag United didn’t rest on their lead and continued to put United Sikkim under heavy fire. Shylo Malswam Tulunga hit the target in the 71st minute, while Ranti scored two more goals (77th & 79th) to the delight of the home fans.

Mohammad Rafique (90’+1′) added another goal, while USFC’s former Costa Rican international Míchael Steven Rodríguez Gutiérrez sealed the heavy win for Prayag United SC with an own goal in the dying moments of the match.

Prayag’s 10-1 win against United Sikkim is the second biggest win in the history of the I-League. Dempo SC are still heading the record books with their 14-0 demolition of Air India in the 2010/11 season when Ranti Martins Soleye scored six goals for the Goan outfit in that match.
