Bayern defeat Barcelona to win Uli Hoeness Cup

FC Bayern Munich v FC Barcelona

FC Bayern Munich have won the Uli Hoeness Cup 2013 with a 2-0 win against Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

Barça had to cope with the absence of all their internationals who participated in the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013, while Bayern had all their stars on board for the clash of the European giants of football.

Superstar Lionel Messi had the first chance of the game, when the little Argentine wonderkid almost tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer with a shot in the very first minute. But his shot went wide and the full-capacity crowd a the Allianz Arena had no doubt that this match could be a real highlight.

Bayern didn’t need too much time to have their first attempt on target. Franck Ribéry went past two defenders before he delivered a perfect pass to Arjen Robben in the Barcelona box. Robben fired a shot just to see it cleared on the goal-line by Adriano.

But the Bundesliga champions didn’t waste their next chance. Skipper Philipp Lahm put the hosts in the lead with a fine header (!) off a Ribéry cross from the left side in the 15th minute.

Bayern were in full controll after the goal and Barça had a tough time to create some scoring opportunities. Rafinha almost scored the equaliser with an own goal, when the Bayern defender chested the ball with the aim to clear it for a corner. But the ball went past Manuel Neuer and hit the post before it went out.

Barça coach Jordi Roura Solà changed his complete team at half-time which didn’t improve the flow for the Catalans. Bayern continued to dominate the game but they didn’t test Barcelona’s new keeper Olazabal too much in the second half.

Mario Mandzukic had the best chance of the second half, but his shot was saved by Olazabal. The Croatian international didn’t waste his second chance of the game, when he slotted home from close range in the 87th minute.

Bayern’s 2-0 win in the Uli Hoeness Cup was a good test for Pep Guardiola’s team ahead of their German Supercup (DFL Supercup) against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
