Borna Coric upset Roger Federer to win the Gerry Weber Open 2018

Borna Coric has claimed his first grass court title on Sunday. The 21 year old Croatian underdog defeated Swiss superstar Roger Federer 7:6, 3:6, 6:2 in the final of the at the 26th Gerry Weber Open 2018 (GWO) in Halle/Westphalia, Germany.

Federer missed out a chance to win his 10th Gerry Weber Open title, while suffering his first defeat on a grass court after 20 wins in a row. Coric on the other side rewarded himself for an impressive GWO campaign, which included wins against the likes of German superstar Alexander Zverev.

Coric and Federer entertained the 11,500 fans at the fully packed Gerry Weber Stadion with some quality tennis. The first set went into tiebreak, which ended in favour of the young Croatian.

Federer focused his game in the second set and dominated the proceedings, which helped him to claim the set. But Coric didn’t look too impressed although losing the second set and continued to display his brand of quality tennis to secure the Gerry Weber Open 2018 title.

Coric received the Gerry Weber Open 2018 trophy from supermodel Eva Herzigová, while other dignitaries such Armin Laschet (Minister President, North Rhine-Westphalia) were also present at the GWO winners ceremony.
