The German Women’s national team have won their second last match of the year as Horst Hrubesch’s team trashed Italy 5-2 in a friendly match at the osnatel Arena in Osnabrück on Saturday.

Germany took an early lead when Lina Magull opened the score sheet in the 6th minute. Sara Däbritz increased the lead in the 18th minute and it looked like the hosts would enter the half-time break with a convincing result.

But Italy bounced back while the Germans looked too comfortable with the lead: Barbara Bonansea (29′) and Daniela Sabatino (43′) levelled the score line as both sides settled for a 2-2 draw after the first half.

Hrubesch made two changes at half-time, while the German team looked fully focused after the breather.

Giulia Gwinn (50′), Lena Petermann (60′) and Leonie Maier (86′) found the back of the net to secure Germany their seventh win in a row equalling their record from 2016.

Germany will face Spain on Tuesday (November 13), which will mark the last game of head coach Horst Hrubesch. The charismatic coach took over the reigns in March 2018 on a interim basis and he could well retire with a new record, with the chance to make it eight straight wins coming tomorrow.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, who is currently involved with the Switzerland national team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup play-offs, will succeed the 67-year old in the new year.
