Dempo Sports Club recorded a hard fought 2-0 win over Vasco Sports Club in a GFA Goa Pro League match played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday.

Jessel Carneiro (75th minute) and Beevan D’Mello (83rd minute) were the scorers for the Golden Eagles.

The win takes Dempo SC to second spot with 17 points from nine matches while Vasco SC are on 10 points from equal outings.

Coming into the game, Vasco Sports Club had a better opening as they kept pressing the Golden Eagles in the first half. Despite numerous chances, the Port Towners couldn’t score their goal.

There was no score in the first half. Nothing changed in the second half, as Dempo SC were marked well by Vasco SC and their constant attacks and raids kept the Panjim based club on their toes.

Dempo Sports Club’s game changed with the introduction of Yogesh Kadam in the second half as the midfielder brought some life in the Dempo’s midfield. The fresh legs gave some creativity and pace into the Golden Eagles’ play.

Dempo SC took the lead through Jessel Carneiro when he hit a powerful drive from a 20-yard distance which had no answer from the rival keeper.

The final minutes of the game saw a different Dempo SC as they were more attacking and creative with their play. Dempo’s Velito Cruz and Naveen Mendes went into the referee’s book for rough play.

Dempo Sports Club doubled the tally in the 83 rd minute when Yogesh started the move from the left flank before playing the ball in the centre to Joaquim Abranches who played a beautiful lofted pass to Beevan, who displayed great skill in controlling the ball before smashing into the net, 2-0.

“We weren’t at our best in the first half but we played a better second half and we deserved to get the three points. We gave more than 100 per cent in the last 20 minutes and we got our result. We now look forward to our next league match.” said a senior Dempo SC team official.
